Network Ten Report- Comparison with ABC TV Network

ABC like Network Ten is a multi-platformed company that has a vast range of target audiences, though it may seem to some that it is for a much more factual and intellectual audience though this is not the case. ABC is a company that’s goals is to educate the Australian people better and is a company funded by the government the audience has a share partly. Many believe that the reason behind the educational programmes are influenced by the government as many believe that politics interferes with this channel a little too much and that the company should become much more independent. In a different manner Network Ten may seem more casual and light-hearted. Some of ABC’s programmes are: 2 shot, 6Teen, 7.30, Adam Hills in Gordon St. Tonight, Agatha Christies Miss Marple and Poirot, Free Range Cook, Art Nation, Bananas in Pyjamas etc... whereas Network Ten’s programmes are more like: 7PM Project, AFL, Bondi Vet, House, Judge Judy, Jamie Oliver, Criminal Intent, Me and My Monsters, NCIS, So you think you can dance, Modern Family, The Defenders etc. ABC clearly is for more mature audiences and Network Ten is for more entertainment purposes, this is why ABC has been wanting to bump up their ratings for a while and rake in more audiences. Unlike Network Ten, ABC owns an array of media formats which are television channels, radio station, a shop (ABC Shop) and a website. Similar to Network Ten, ABC is multi-platformed and they are ABC 1, ABC 2, ABC 3, ABC News 24 which is also shown on their website alongside ABC IView where they can view the episode or some interviews from that show, this like Network Ten caters for busy lives. ABC 1 is considered as intelligient entertainment and family entertainment at times, it is supposed to be targeted at many people with different likes. This channel has two target audiences which are significantly different as some programmes are targeted to the 0-15 year levels and also caters for 35-49 year olds which supports the concept that this platform is for mature adults. ABC 2 showcases from 7pm-2am innovative and eclectic international drama, comedy, entertainment, international factual programmes and documentaries, though it is targeted at a younger audience than ABC 1 it is not as young as young adults or teenagers. The age range is 25-39 years of age. ABC 3 programmes had once been on ABC 2 mostly during the mornings and the afternoons catering for school children. Now that there is a new platform that was recently developed ABC 3 runs from 6am-9pm as it is aimed towards 6-15 year olds giving them distinctly Australian commercial-free children’s programmes of wildlife, drama, animation, comedy, action-adventure, reality and intellectually easy to understand news.  Unlike Network Ten, ABC have not targeted 16-24 year olds at all which means that Network Ten has more diversity of audience. ABC Radio has many genres depending on what the people want to listen but the advantage is it gives legitimate up-to-date news and can make the audience aware of certain current world and national issues. The ABC shop sells books, dvds, music (childrens and adult), toys, clothing and merchandise and the branch is called ABC Commercial. The website abc.net.au displays like Network Ten, what’s on, the shop, what is happening in the world, what’s new etc. ABC News 24 three million Australians in January is a 24 hour newsroom giving the current news all of the time. Every week ABC’s metropolitan viewers reach up to 8.5 million viewers and in rural areas by 4.1 million viewers.
